Harrowheart's Guide to Durant Events - A list by Isidor
Do:
Be Polite - Use 'please', 'thank you' and 'you're welcome'.
Be Courteous - Offer others the last drink before taking it yourself, hold the door open for others, offer your seat to women, elders or children if they don't have one.
Listen - Even when you think they're dull or wrong, listen to what they have to say first.
Greet with a handshake, or the same way someone greets you. Eg, if someone bows, you bow in return.
Introduce your guest or friends to others.
Approach your seat from the left hand side, exit on the right.
Ask the servants for help if you are lot or confused about something.
Excuse yourself from any situation you feel uncomfortable with or uncertain about. Use myself as an excuse if you need to.
Don't:
Be gross - No burping, picking (nose, teeth, etc).
Talk about bodily functions.
Make vulgar comments or innuendos.
Smell anyone.
Be loud - Exactly that.
Don't raise your voice in indignation.
Have your phone out - Even to look something up. Phones kill a conversation.
Cough, sneeze, burp, etc into your right hand. You use that for shaking other people's hands, don't use the same hand for that.
Nudge someone.
Wave or touch someone to get their attention. If you must touch them, then simply tap them on the shoulder.
Take off your clothes unless it is an outer later of clothing like a coat or jacket.
Announce that you need to go to the bathroom. Simply excuse yourself. If you don't know where it is, the servants will be happy to direct you.
Point at another person. Use an open palm to gesture to a person, but never point a finger.
Talk about how rich a person is.
Talk about the servants.
Go into rooms you even suspect are protected by magic.
Reveal anything to anyone if you wouldn't be happy with everyone in the room knowing.
Say anything rude or unkind (unless you can leave everyone smiling in confusion afterwards).
Dining Notes:
Eat with your mouth closed.
Never speak with your mouth full.
Take your time to chew and eat. Never rush.
Keep your elbows off the table.
Eat from the outside in - Use the cutlery on the outside first.
Pass food to the right.
Never stretch.
Ask the servants to get you something if it is not easily available. They are here to make your dining experience smooth and enjoyable.
Do not tuck your napkin into your collar, or blow your nose with it. Rest it on your lap.
Do not blow on your food.
Do not cut up all your food at once, cut one piece off at a time.
Eat in small bites.
When you are finished eating, leave your cutlery on the plate, not on the table.
